Saturday: Morning Walk

“What’s the matter with Yoram?” Miriam asks as soon as they

leave.

Maya shrugs.

“Isn’t he going to see a doctor?”

“A doctor?!” Maya’s voice is suddenly very high. “What for?”

“He doesn’t feel well!”

Maya snorts. “You don’t go to the doctor here every time you don’t feel well.”

Then when do you go? When you do feel well? Or only when you have to rush to the emergency room? “It’s no laughing matter, he should see a doctor. You know, with his background . . . With Yisrael, it also started like it was just a cold,” she tells Maya. “He was just like Yoram: tough. Didn’t take care of himself. He got up and went to work that morning, even though I begged him to stay home and rest . . . He was very young. Fifty-four.”

She wants to keep telling Maya how they called her from Yisrael’s work when he collapsed. How she rushed to the hospital and sat with him all night, and precisely when she went home in the morning, just to change her clothes, the phone call came . . . But Maya pushes the stroller on and walks fast, too fast, looking straight ahead.
